La notte del 27 maggio il vulcano Pacaya erutta fino a 1500 metri di altezza una colonna di cenere che poi ricade in differenti aree del Guatemala. Due giorni dopo: l'uragano Agata.

<<La nostra gente ha ripulito a fatica sabbia e sassi depositati sulle machine. Poi abbiamo lavorato un giorno e mezzo per rimuovere la sabbia che era penetrata anche all'interno dei macchianari con il rischio di danneggiarli seriamente. Arrivati al 30% del lavoro di pulizia, abbiamo dovuto far fronte ad un altro disastro naturale, l'uragano Agata, sabato 29 maggio.>>

I danni subiti dal magazzino e dagli uffici sono ingenti, è stato completamente distrutto l'impianto eletrico e non sono ancora stati valutati i danni al caffè. Le Coperative che hanno subito danni (non ancora quantificati) sono quelle di Cuilco River, delle aree di San Marcos e nel villaggio Chapas (Coop. Nuevo Sendero), a Chimaltenango, Jalapa and Jutiapa.

We are sorry to inform you that on Thursday 27th of May at night time the volcano Pacaya erupted, ejecting ash columns up to 1500 meters and ash rained down in different Guatemalan areas. Under heavy rains our people tried very hard to clean up the sands and stones remained lying on the mill. Furthermore we had to clean our selecting machines for one and a half day due to intruding fine volcano sand which could be very damaging for the machines. When about 30% got cleaned, we had to face another natural disaster, the storm Agatha, on Saturday 29th of May.

As a result of the tropical storm Agatha, we experienced in the warehouses in Palin the destruction by almost 90% of the northern perimeter wall, siltation of the truck scale, of the offices and total destruction of electricity plant (no light at all, for the next 10 days), without yet quantifying the damaged coffee: parchment, green and by-products.

Concerning the Cooperatives, damages are reported around the Cuilco River, in areas of San Marcos, in village Chapas (Coop. Nuevo Sendero), Chimaltenango, Jalapa and Jutiapa (among other areas). It is still necessary to investigate and quantify damage in all cooperatives of those areas.
